Davinci ARTIQ Features

The Davinci ARTIQ is a vape pen – reimagined in portable vaporizer form. The average 510 vape for an oil cartridge is a pen or stick battery that the oil cartridge would screw on top of the battery. The end form is very pen-like. The Davinci ARTIQ takes this basic functionality and re-imagines the technology to deliver a more refined product in both function and appearance.

  1. Compatible with bottom airflow 510 Cartridges: The Davinci ARTIQ offers versatility and compatibility with a wide range of common oil cartridges that fit on a 510 thread. Anything from CBD, THC, Delta 8&9 variants.
  2. Extended air path lowers the temperature of vapor: The elongated airpath in the Davinci ARTIQ reduces vapor temperature by a reported 90%. This will make for a better, more flavorful, and less harsh experience
  3. Hidden oil cartridge: The compact design of the ARTIQ hides the oil cartridge, preventing oil quality deterioration, flavor loss, and secrecy.
  4. Type-C USB Charging: The device uses a Type-C USB charging port for convenient and fast charging.
  5. 1-Year Warranty: The ARTIQ has a 1-year warranty, demonstrating Davinci’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

Performance and details

Compatibility & Terminology

  1. 510 thread: This is a type of threading that is a standard in the vaping industry. The “510” part of the name refers to the threading specification, which is used to connect the cartridge to the battery. This is a universal standard.
  2. Bottom airflow: This describes the way air flows into the cartridge. With a bottom airflow design, air enters the cartridge from the bottom, passes over the heating element (which vaporizes the oil), and then the vapor travels up through the mouthpiece to be inhaled. This type of airflow is thought to improve flavor and the overall vaping experience because it allows for a smoother and cooler vape.
  3. Oil Cartridge: This refers to the type of substance the cartridge is designed for. In this case, it’s designed for vaping oils, which can include CBD oil, THC oil, Delta 8 / Delta 9, or other types of oils. These cartridges usually consist of a chamber for the oil, and a heating element or coil.

Overall, a 510-thread bottom airflow oil cartridge is a piece of vaping hardware. You fill it (or buy it) with the oil of your choice, attach it to a 510-threaded battery, and you’re ready to vape.

Air Path & Cooling

Davinci is reporting a 90% heat reduction on the overall heat of the inhaled vapor. This is due to an elongated or extended “air path” creating a passive cooling of the heated vapor.

When you’re vaping, the substance you’re vaporizing gets heated up to a high temperature to vaporize in order to turn it into an inhalable vapor. The distance between the heating element and your mouth is known as the “air path”.

Now, if that air path is short, the vapor has less time and space to cool down before it reaches your mouth, which can result in a hotter, harsher inhale. On the other hand, if the air path is longer, the vapor has more time and distance to cool down before you inhale it. Every millimeter the hot vapor travels, allows the vapor to cool down. This is usually accomplished with a spiral, or maze design internally.

A longer air path essentially gives the vapor more ‘time and space’ to cool down before it hits your mouth and lungs, making the experience more comfortable and enjoyable. This concept is often applied to larger vaping devices like desktop vaporizers, which can afford to have a longer air path without sacrificing portability. Smaller devices, it is much more difficult to achieve because of such limited space. A typical portable vape pen has a tiny, almost negligible air path due to its compact design.

This is where the experience in design and manufacturing from Davinci Vaporizer excels above the marketplace. The ability to maximize those internal spaces and deliver a top-shelf product.

Heating System & temperature modes

The ARTIQ is unlike all other Davinci Vaporizer products in its heating system and temperature control. In other Davinci Vaporizer products like Davinci Ascent, Davinci Miqro, Davinci IQ, Davinci IQC, and Davinci IQ2 – you can dial in the precise temperature you want to heat your material to.

The ARTIQ does not offer precision temperature control. It is not heating an oven for ground dry herbs.

Instead, the Davinci ARTIQ provides 3 different heat settings via voltage regulation and intensity. Essentially, a Low, Medium, and High setting of the battery output. You can choose between 2.8 volts, 3.2 volts, and 3.6 volts.

This incremental voltage variation is common in higher-quality traditional vape pen batteries.

Materials used

The external shell of the Davinci ARTIQ is made of high-quality aluminum. Internally the carriage and housing is plastic, and the extended air path and magnetic cartridge connections are all medical-grade stainless steel.

Charging Time

The Davinci ARTIQ takes about 90 minutes to fully charge from 0 to 100. It uses a USB Type-C charging cable. This is far superior to most vape pen batteries.

In my experience, most vape pen batteries require a micro-USB cable (which is inferior in speed and wattage), or they require an awkward USB-A adapter that you screw your 510 battery into. The entire traditional charging technology of common vape pen batteries is awful compared to a well-designed and strong USB-C port. This again points to the beauty of this device.

Additionally, the USB-C charging system is designed to utilize pass-through technology. Pass-through allows you to use the product while it is charging.

This is not common in most \portable vaporizers in the world, and absolutely rare among traditional vape products in general.

Battery

Davinci ARTIQ houses a 760 mAh battery. Depending on voltage settings, and how big of hits you take – the battery is designed to last 250-400 draws per charge.

Warranty

The Davinci ARTIQ has a one-year warranty. Now while this may initially seem like a disappointment in comparison to the other Davinci products, but I can help you to understand why 1 year is very reasonable.

When you buy a “top-shelf” flagship vaporizer like the Davinci IQ2, you get a 10-year warranty. That is baked into the $300 flagship price.

At $59 MSRP, this is a price entry point much more accessible to every person. And because there are literally a million different types of oil cartridges, manufacturers, and compounds – the variables to warranty and protect against is overwhelming. There are dozens of reasons that a 3rd party product or human error could create a problem – completely outside the quality control of Davinci’s responsibility.

As an owner of numerous vape pen batteries, I can’t think of a single instance where one was warranted longer than 90 days.

A 1-year warranty, on a $59 product with Davinci’s reputation is acceptable to me.

Davinci ARTIQ Conclusion

In conclusion, Davinci’s new ARTIQ vaporizer is a great new piece of gear. I would not hesitate to buy one for my tool kit. I will never want to use a traditional vape pen battery system ever again.

The Davinci ARTIQ brings fresh innovation to the tired 510 “vape pen” product marketplace. DaVinci has reimagined and elevated how a common cartridge should be vaped.

Here’s why:

  1. USB-C Charging power, convenience, and pass-through technology allow use while charging.
  2. Extended / Elongated air path for cooler vapor entering your lungs. This allows for more flavor and bigger hits.
  3. Enclosed hidden cartridge. No more shattered oil carts, or flavor deterioration from sunlight, or broadcasting what you’re vaping.

Davinci has taken one of the most overlooked and common cannabis items to be sold around the world and made it better through innovation in design and engineering.

The quality of the components, the price of manufacturing, the logistics of distribution and fulfillment, all add up to a product that should cost more than $59. This new product not only re-invents the vape cartridge ecosystem but introduces an entirely new avatar of buyers to the Davinci vaporizer lineup.

I don’t rave about many products, but I am fully recommending Davinci ARTIQ as a substantial upgrade to anyone that likes cartridge vape pens.

DaVinci Vaporizer introduces the IQ2.

DaVinci Vaporizer officially announced the launch of its newest portable herbal vaporizer the IQ2.  And if you love weed vapes as much as we do here, then this is great news.  The original Davinci IQ vaporizer launched a little over 3 years ago and was a big hit in the handheld herbal vape market almost immediately.  And with 3 years of time to revise and perfect upon the original IQ, We are anxious to see how the product will stack up in a head-to-head comparison to our original DaVinci IQ Review which we had ranked as our #1 favorite vaporizer.

What is DaVinci claiming about the Davinci IQ2?

First, let’s take a look at some details in the press release:

” As the first Load Your Own & Know Your Dose vaporizer, the IQ2 features full on-device dosage control and session-tracking information without requiring a separate app.”

A lot can be derived from this marketing lingo immediately if you know the vaporizer business.

  1. “Load your own” distances DaVinci from the VAPI illnesses from cheap disposable pre-filled pens.  And rightfully so.
  2. “Know your own Dose” positions Davinci as a thought leader in precision dosing, directly in line with their recent partnership with Cansativa to produce cannabis vaporizers specifically for medical users.
  3. By including “on-device” dosage control, Davinci is side-stepping the recent Apple ban on vaping apps on iPhones which normally allows users to extend control of the devices.  Luckily,  Android phones can still install and run these apps – which is the lion’s share of global users.

What is new in the DaVinci IQ2?

  1. Brushed aluminum finish.  This will be more polished and shiny in appearance and may expose fingerprints, but has more of a wow factor.
  2. Adjustable airflow.  There is now an analog dial on the bottom of the IQ2 that allows you to fine-tune the amount of airflow and draw resistance.  Some people prefer tighter/looser draws https://davinci.pxf.io/Py6QEXwhen inhaling – this will allow you to choose your resistance and density – as well as potentially cool your vapor with additional airflow.
  3. 30% Longer Pearl stem.  This allows for greater adjustment of the depth of the pearl and compression of your bowl.
  4. Increased mouthpiece airflow.  The airflow holes on the top mouthpiece appear to have increased slightly in diameter – allowing for more generous draws.
  5. New flavor chamber design.  The original IQ had a bottleneck in the flavor chamber which was nicknamed “Satan’s anus” because of the inability to clean it easily.  The IQ2 flavor chamber has addressed that problem in a newer design.
  6. Thicker oven.  Boasting a 20% thicker oven with increased insulation from the nearby battery will increase heating efficiency.
  7. Ceramic Extract Tab and 0.2g Dosage Pod.  Small included additional accessories new to the IQ2.

Pros & Cons of the DaVinci IQ2

ProsCons
  1. Removable 18650 battery.  Just like the original, this is a big distinction in comparison to other vapes like the Pax.  The ability to remove faulty batteries, or upgrade them, or charge externally is just too important to not have in 2020.
  2. 10-year warranty.  Especially considering you can upgrade and replace your battery, this means the life cycle of this device is quite long.
  3. If you mainly vape ground flower, the IQ2 is both compact and flavorful.  The Ceramic internals just tastes better than stainless steel.
  4. Cosmetically, it is beautiful!
  1. Micro USB – although a small footprint, and cheaper in manufacturing, the public wants a USB-C port for much faster charging.
  2. IQ2 is now 11 grams heavier and 9% larger in overall size than the original IQ
  3. Although labeled and priced as a dual-use vaporizer, for both concentrates and flower, the conduction heating chamber & Ceramic Extract Tab are too small to effectively use dabs.  And it complicates clean up and in my opinion, it’s a reach – and just not worth it.

Where to buy the DaVinci IQ2

At the time of this writing, the DaVinci IQ2 was just released today.  And because of that, none of our favorite retailers have it in stock yet, and the only place to buy it is from the manufacturer.  CLICK HERE to visit the IQ2 page directly on Davinci Vaporizer’s website.  I do want to mention, that, unlike other product releases, this does not appear to be a “pre-order” purchase.  So Kudos to the DaVinci Vaporizer team for releasing the new vape with inventory ready.

I would imagine that over the coming week, you will see the DaVinci IQ2 for sale and available to buy on a number of competing retailers – some of which will offer additional freebies, as well as honor DaVinci Vaporizer Coupon Codes.  I would keep an eye open to see which retailers pop up on that site to see where the best bargains are to be had.  But if you need to be the first one to have it, or are looking for a last-minute Holiday home-run gift for your favorite stoner – head on over to  Davinci Vaporizer and pick up the brand-new IQ2! Or check out the new DaVinci ARTIQ here.

If you have a question, let us know below – we probably have the answer.

Illinois cannabis advocates have been eagerly awaiting a recreational regulation bill forecasted by the governor and last night, they got the forward movement they craved. On Wednesday, the state’s Senate passed a bill legalizing a regulated cannabis industry, along with consumption, possession, and sale for residents 21 years and older.

The plan, which will now go to the House for approval, was part of Governor J.B. Pritzker’s campaign promises. At the start of the month, the politician told the press that he was deep into negotiations with other policymakers about the form that legalization would assume.

Unsurprisingly, Pritzker seemed thrilled to see the momentum gaining for his marijuana master plan. “Illinois is poised to become the first state in the nation that put equity and criminal justice reform at the heart of its approach to legalizing cannabis, and I’m grateful that the Senate has taken this important step with a bipartisan vote,” he tweeted after the news went out of the senators’ affirmative decision.

The text of the bill contains instructions for a social equity program that will prioritize industry leadership by people from communities that have been negatively impacted by the War on Drugs. The bill also features language prioritizing pardons for people who were targeted by the War on Drugs, which was among the issues that raised red flags for Republicans regarding the legislation, but whose social justice aspect was a stated priority of Pritzker. Language around the issue was toned down to insure that it had the necessary number of votes to clear the Senate vote.

The governor’s office says that past offenses of up to 30 grams will be eligible for expungement if the crimes were not associated with violence. The Prisoner Review Board will be recommending to the governor whether pardons should be issued. Those with past offenses that involve possession of quantities over 500 grams will require an official petition by the individual or their attorney.

The legislation would make it legal to possess 30 grams of flower, five grams of concentrate, or cannabis products containing 500 milligrams of THC. Separate limits are established for visitors who are not official state residents, like a 15-gram cap on flower possession.

Approval of the bill largely fell along party lines. Senator Jason Barickman was one of only three Republicans that okayed the measure, commenting that he thought the bill met “the primary role of government … to adopt safeguards to protect minors and safeguards to protect the public when an individual’s use puts others in harm’s way.” He also said that he saw marijuana use as “largely a personal choice.”

One issue that reportedly delayed the approval of the legislation was senators’ concerns over whether individuals should be allowed to grow cannabis in their homes — an issue that has seen very diverse resolutions in the states that have thus far legalized recreational cannabis. In Illinois, the senators’ answer was to authorize five at-home plants for the state’s 65,000 medical marijuana patients, but not for recreational users.

That’s not the only notable restriction in the legislation. There would be a “zero tolerance” policy for marijuana in the workplace, and the Illinois State Police will be in charge of examining ways to institute DUI laws for cannabis users.

Introducing the G Pen Gio!

Emerald Cup Debut

The G Pen Gio made its debut this weekend at the Emerald Cup in Santa Rosa, CA and we could not be more excited! The Gio is an all-new portable concentrate solution from the makers of the Original G Pen. There have been little teases and previews of this little vaporizer for several months now, but now we get our first look and our first taste.

With the announcement of their new product the Gio they also announced their latest collaboration with Berner SF Cookies line who debuted their latest drop, London Pound Cake. It’s clear with this collaboration that G Pen was only interested in the best and most flavorful of strains for their oil pen. There also seem to be 2 versions of the Gio to look forward to, the blue and white Cookies edition and the traditional G Pen black. G Pen is no stranger to collaborations their work in the past includes a list of industry brands and celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, DGK, and Burton snowboards. I’m sure we are likely to see many different brands and collaborations with this device coming soon.

G Pen Gio

The Gio is a pod-based oil vaporizer where users can vape cartridges pre-filled with cannabis oil. It is a super portable vaporizer that is easily concealed in the clutch of your fist. To use the Gio just insert the pod and inhale making the operation of this vape as simple as can be. As far as the external design the Gio bares resemblance to the G Pen Elite, with its slick form factor and single LED “G” in the center of the device body.

We can assume that the device will be available and sold online from G Pen’s website as well as any dispensaries that carry the pods.  The Pods will likely have to be purchased from exclusively local dispensaries considering they contain cannabis oil.

G Pen Gio Pods

Here is what we know so far; the G Pen Gio takes branded G Pen Gio pods that are to be used exclusively with the Gio battery base. We also know that the Gio will have a strong collaboration with SF Cookies and the Exotics line of strains and oils. So in addition to the newly released London Pound Cake, we will be able to expect flavors such as Girl Scout Cookies, Lemonade, Biscotti, Strawberry Shortcake, and Khalifa Kush as pictured to the left on Berner’s Instagram Page.

There has been no official announcement when exactly the Gio battery base or the pods will be available to the public. However, I’ve been informed that there are plans to make pods available in all recreational legal states likely starting with California, Nevada, and Washington where Berner has larger distribution operations. Only time will tell.

G Pen Gio vs Pax Era

This is a very interesting matchup between two of the largest companies in portable vaporizers. The Pax Era has been out on the market for about a year now and they have collaborated with several different extract manufacturers to provide a variety of different strains for their user base to enjoy. Now available in all recreational legal states, CA, WA, CO, NV, and OR in various dispensaries make it fairly easy to add this as a regular piece of your 420 arsenals. While they have spread across states, into hundreds of dispensaries, and worked with many extractors to fill their pods none of these extractors have a “bigger” name in the industry than Pax.

G Pen, on the other hand, has a strong following as a portable vaporizer company, in fact, many people commonly say “G Pen” when they refer to dab pens, like the way people commonly refer to gelatin as “Jello” regardless of what brand it actually is. With this big brand that they have, they also chose to partner with arguably the biggest brand in the cannabis industry with the Cookies line. The Cookies brand means many things to many people, it means some of the fines cannabis that money can buy, it represents the culture of a young outspoken generation, and it means that whether you know G Pen or you know Cookies you’re going to want this vape and only this vape. It will be very interesting to see how far the reach of the G Pen Gio will actually extend as they come charging onto dispensary shelves to compete for your hard-earned dollar.

New Vape Alert! The good folks over at Davinci Vaporizer have outdone themselves again with their latest release of the Davinci IQ in an all-new color, Olive. The new “Olive” color is the first variation of the IQ that we have seen since its release back in October of 2016. The stunning green metallic finish is eye-catching and much more dynamic than the standard color finishes of the IQ. Even the 51 LED light display now flashes a sporty green hue when projecting your temperature setting. The Olive IQ also ships in a new limited edition package, now in a beautiful matte black box with green accent highlights that make the text pop. Inside you’ll find the standard IQ accessories, cleaning kit, keychain, mouthpiece, and matching olive carry that can match your IQ.

Davinci Is also offering the option to add a “Collector’s Edition Kit” to your purchase. The collector’s edition kit arrives in a beautiful branded, reusable wooden box much like a treasure chest this guy is full of goodies to get even the most spoiled vaporizer enthusiasts giddy with excitement. In addition to the limited edition Olive IQ, you will also receive an IQ soft case, Davinci glass jar, IQ glass spacers, 3 tins of legal herbs for aromatherapy use, and some Davinci swag in the form of their stash hat, lanyard, and silicone wristband. One of the best items in the kit bar far is the highly sought-after Davinci glass spacers. These spacers allow you to adjust and minimize the volume of your oven to hold a smaller amount of herbs per session. Another really cool item is the Stash Hat. Just a simple black snapback hat with a nifty Davinci Logo on the front, but it’s what is inside that makes it special. Under the flap of the inside rim of the hat, you will find a concealed zipper that opens up to a small pocket that you can use to stash whatever you like. Comes in really handy when trying to be discrete and sneak some fun into a concert or sporting event as does the new Davinci ARTIQ vape.

As if this new collector’s kit and limited edition color weren’t enough. Davinci Vaporizers has also added another level of customization for your IQ vaporizer with custom engraving. For an additional $10 you’ll be able to add a message and a bit of your own flair to your new favorite vaporizer. With the upcoming holiday season, a shiny new vape with a custom inscription for that special someone makes for one hell of a gift. I wonder if they’ll offer gift wrapping too!

PAX 3 PRICE DROP!!!!!!

The folks over at Pax Labs have announced today on their Instagram and via updates on their website. This price drop applies to both the Pax3 and Pax2 devices. Some very interesting moves as we head into the 4th quarter of the year and begin the holiday shopping season. Vape prices have long been a controversial topic, especially brands like Pax.  In addition to the price drop, Pax Labs has also announced a new series of colors and finishes for the Pax3. Let’s digest these changes and see what this all really means.

Pax has done a couple of things to make their Pax3 more affordable and more versatile. The first obvious change is the price drop. The complete kit of a Pax3 now sits at $249.99 a $25 drop in price. In addition to this price adjustment, Pax has also made a minimal kit available for purchase. If you don’t want or need all of the little fancy Pax3 accessories like the oil can, extra screens, and the spare oven lids you can pick up their “Device Only” package which only includes the Pax3, USB charger, and cleaning kit, similar to the kits that you would get when purchasing a Pax2. For this “Device Only” kit the Pax3 sits at a pretty $199.99. The same as the old price of the Pax2. There are also 4 new finishes that I mentioned before. The Pax3 will now be available in a Matte finish in addition to the Glossy. Pax has also introduced a new color with a stunning matte teal which I can tell you right now as a San Jose Sharks fan I am very excited for this one.

For the Pax2 there have also been some changes and price adjustments. First things first the cost for the Pax2 kit still with a full 10-year warranty is now a record low of $179.99. This makes the Pax2 one of the best and most affordable portable vaporizers on the market. Here is the really interesting part. Pax has made itself a market leader and giant in the world of portable vaporizers. That is thanks in part to their 10-year warranty that has been offered with their products since the original Pax. Now here with this price change, you can purchase a Pax2 directly from Pax labs with only a 2-year limited warranty for as low as $149.99! That is crazy! The Pax2 was one of the best portable vaporizers on the market when it was released and kept its market share and place in our hearts because it was cheaper than the Pax3 and just as functional. Now sitting at a price of $149 I don’t know if it’s ever been more worth it. For those worried about not getting the extra warranty let me tell you a little something about the batteries used in the Pax2. They use a standard 18650 battery which is known to have a life cycle of about 300 charges. What this means is that it can be charged, used, and recharged, 300 times. After that, it will begin to degrade and ultimately stop working. This charging cycle usually takes about 1 ½ – 2 years to happen. As long as you replace your Pax2 before that 2 years you’ll be all good or you’ll be ready to move on to a new vape as changes seem to happen as often as smartphones these days.

Rumors / What we expect from this price drop.

For those who remember……. Last time that Pax Vapor adjusted the price of their products, in fact, every time they have a price drop on their products. It is typically a few weeks before the launch of a new product. Last year at this same time Pax dropped the price of the Pax2 from $249 down to $199 just 3 weeks before the announcement of the Pax3 which was released at $249.99. If history repeats itself, I would assume another Pax product will show its head soon.  Keep in mind, that this week – much of the industry is in Denver for the CHAMPS convention.  Last year at this time – at CHAMPS, PAX 3, and Pax Era was released, and Firefly 2 finally started to hit a shelf or two  – as well as the DaVinci IQ.  Furthermore,  About 2 years ago Pax had a survey that was leaked that showed the potential release of the Pax3, Pax era, and a third product called the Pax Air. The Pax 3 and Era have both now been released into the market however the Pax Air has remained in the dark. Time will show whether or not a new product lies in the shadows.

In other words…  Pax may be about to drop something new.  And we can’t wait to see it.

We’ll let you know what we know soon!

Vaporizers have changed the way we talk about, and smoke, cannabis.

Chris Folkerts remembers the first time he hit a weed vape. It didn’t get him high, but he still considers the incident “probably the most powerful moment” of his life.

“Holy shit,” Folkerts recalled thinking to himself. “This just fucking digitized weed.”

That was seven years ago. At the time, Folkerts was working at a heavy metal record label in Los Angeles. But soon after his first toke of a pre-filled THC-infused vapor cartridge, he started to develop what would become the G Pen, and began hustling the devices from the trunk of his car. Today, Grenco Science, which Folkerts founded in 2012*, has become ubiquitous in hip hop culture. Everyone from Wiz Khalifa to Open Mike Eagle has rapped about the G Pen. Snoop Dogg had his own branded line.

The vaporizer market—estimated to now be worth billions, although exact numbers are hard to come by—barely existed a decade ago. Yet, it’s completely changed how thousands of people get high or administer medicine. How did it get this way? And where is the market headed?

Vaporizers, or vapes, have been around for a while, only now they can now pair with your smartphone, have no trouble vaporizing both cannabis concentrates and dry flower, and offer customized heating profiles. Some offer built-in water-filtration, while others look like fountain pens. The bulky Storz & Bickel’s classic Volcano is now eclipsed by pocket portability and long battery-life. Trendy modern vapes now more closely resemble a flash drive than whatever wooden New Age gem box the Magic Flight is supposed to be.

This isn’t a coincidence. The modern marijuana vape market is deeply rooted in Silicon Valley. Mark Williams, a co-founder of Firefly, a leading brand of cannabis vaporizers, started as a product developer at Apple. PAX Labs, which makes the PAX 3 weed vape and the Juul nicotine vape, began as a San Francisco startup. Just two years ago, the so-called “iPhone of vaporizers” had a $46.7 million Series C funding round to expand overseas. Even dispensaries strive to resemble Apple stores—part of an “upscale revolution in cannabis retailing.”

“When this started, vapor tanks and concentrates accounted for less than five percent of sales across all dispensaries,” Folkerts told me on a phone call. “Seven years later, they account for more than 50 percent in a lot of places.”

Some vapor tech companies, such as KandyPens and Dr. Dabber, are claiming between 350 and 500 percent growth in the past two or three years alone.

“Ten years ago, the idea of vaping anything as opposed to smoking it was a bit of a novel idea, but now it’s pretty standard practice,” said Sasha Kadey, CMO of Greenlane, which owns VapeWorld, the largest vaporizer distributor in the United States.

Folkerts believes vapes are responsible for removing the stigma around medical marijuana, which in turn has led to more states adopting pro-cannabis legislation. Some states, such as Pennsylvania and Florida, only allow vaping medical cannabis. In Folkerts’ opinion, there’s no way to class-up ripping a bong, but even people who don’t smoke appear generally accepting of vapes.

“Even a nice pipe or a chillum, if you go in the corner and light a lighter, it could be crack, right?” Folkerts said. “But it could be crack in a G Pen, and people would think it fucking looks smooth and sweet. It’s like totally crooked. [Vaporizing] changed people’s perception of the consumption aspect in a lot of ways.”

The ubiquity of vapes also means things are getting more competitive. Where once a handful of companies dominated the market, now there are dozens, and their product lines are getting more complex and creative: LED displays, Bluetooth app synchronization, lithium-ion batteries. But above all, companies are aiming to be seen as professional and healthy.

According to Kadey and others I talked to, the marijuana vaporizer market is trending toward closed-system models—that is, disposable pre-filled cartridges of liquid cannabis extract, rather than open-system models, in which the user manually fills the cartridge. Pre-dosed, self-contained systems are seen as more medicinal by some, and make weed entry-level for even grandma. The Atlantic recently wrote about HMBLDT, a low-THC vape pen company. Grenco Science is developing its own disposable, pre-filled pen cartridges, called Gio, which will be released late July.

The growth of the cannabis-centered vaporizer industry shows no signs of stopping, especially as more states come on board with medical and recreational weed. One thing seems certain: The future of getting high is digital.

The Pax line of vapes have something of a reputation. They are the luxury-ish brand everyone, and their dog has heard of. And that’s not without reason. These folks make a damned fine vape. The Pax 2 was the real showstopper. It was one of the first herb vapes that was dignified. It had phenomenal build quality and offered a great, entertaining, and simple experience. Not perfect, by any means, but a solid outing.

And now we have the Pax 3. And it’s basically the same thing. And that’s wonderful. Of course, there are some new additions. The Pax 3 can handle concentrates as well as herbs, for example. It’s got an app and comes with a few more bells and whistles, but it’s essentially the same tried, and true vape everyone knows and loves.

There’s nothing wrong with an incremental upgrade. If you have a Pax 2 and you’re fine with it, you can stop reading and keep on toking until your little buddy breaks down. For everyone else, let me tell you about one of the most pleasant vapes around. It’s got a couple of knocks, but it’s never a bad choice.

The first thing to know about the Pax is that it’s small. About an inch square by four three inches and change long. It’s also super easy to use. Simply tap the top button once, and the device hums to life and gets to work heating up your loaded material. You can immediately shift into temperature selection with a long-press and then cycle through setting with a single press before back to heating with a long.

It’s so straightforward, so easy to use it’s a wonder why anyone bothers doing anything else, and no wonder that so many settle on these things as their first serious vapes. Now, of course, the more complex mechanisms keep you from accidentally turning the thing on and wasting herb, but the Pax has a brilliantly simple solution — a concave button. It’s much less likely to be accidentally pressed if it’s an indent. That’s just smart engineering.

Similarly, the oven uses a simple magnetic lid. It also comes in two sizes, so you can select a heavy or light session — if you don’t want to waste any material. The sharp design ideas run throughout the product, with one major exception — the vapor path. The over sits on the opposite side of the vape. Okay, that’s normal, fine whatever. The thin tube that carries the vapor though is not only a little tough to get to — being straight through the center — it can be tough to clean. I and a couple of others I’ve known have had problems where material can get lodged in the path — clogging the whole thing and wasting the material for your session.

It can be avoided somewhat by making sure you pack your herb tightly without overdoing it, but that’s not a surefire fix, and I still had some problems.

That aside, everything about this thing is damned solid.

For the time being, Vapeworld has the Pax 3 for $275 with free shipping — about what you’d pay for the Firefly 2 or the Davinci IQ, all three top-end machines suited for different folks.

Pros

Excellent Build Quality
Great Feature Set
Pleasant Experience

Cons

Obnoxiosly tough to clean sometimes
Can get weirdly messy on its own — even with precaution

Bottom line

The Pax 3 is an all-around solid vape. At this price range, I’d consider your options and compare for your use case, but it’s almost impossible to be disappointed in this machine.

Innovation, in 2017, is a buzzword that’s lost its meaning. It’s used as a descriptor for anything the tech industry touches, from the mundane, like grocery aisles, to generation-defining achievements like private space travel.

The cannabis industry is no exception.

Every so often, however, a truly innovative product lands in your hands. And that’s what the Davinci IQ is. A revelation in handheld form, the vaporizer makes the shoddily-rolled joints in Woodstock documentaries seem like the dark ages.

Davinci’s name isn’t an accident: It’s meant to evoke Leonardo, the polymath of Renaissance fame.

Vaporizers have come a long way in their short history. The pioneering Volcano, a desktop appliance, was the pinnacle of vaping technology when it debuted in 2000 for $599. Then, the handheld Pax — which hit the scene in 2014 for $199 — was quickly dubbed “the iPhone of vapes,” and set a new industry standard.

The market has exploded since and the options can be overwhelming. There are “dab pens” which are highly portable but only use difficult-to-find oils. There are disposable vaporizers, sold in retail stores in legal marijuana states. And there’s a dizzying array of handheld vaporizers of varying qualities that use old-school flower, oil, or a combination of both.

I did the due diligence so you don’t have to: The Davinci IQ, high-priced but stocked with features, is right one to buy.

Davinci IQThe Davinci IQ fits nicely in the palm of your hand.

The DaVinci IQ, which retails at $274.99, is a slick piece of technology. It fits nicely in the palm of your hand, and has a weight to it that screams quality compared to other vaporizers I’ve handled — like a Rolex, compared to a cheap knockoff.

It’s not only aesthetically pleasing: The IQ shines where it matters. It produces some of the highest quality vapor I’ve experienced from a handheld. Best of all, there’s little-to-no learning curve, unlike a lot of vaporizers on the market. While I tested with loose leaf tobacco (I live in New York City, where marijuana isn’t legal for adult use), the vapor was unparalleled from the first hit. Some vapes take a specific technique to dial in the right way to hit, a learning curve that most casual users don’t want to deal with.

The DaVinci IQ is built with an all-ceramic zirconia vapor path, meaning that every internal piece your herb touches on its way to you is free from the burnt metal or plastic after-taste that many other vapes produce. It tastes really good.

Packing it is a breeze as well. The oven at the bottom of the unit is surrounded by a smooth metal slope. All you need to do is grind your chosen herb and drop it into the oven. There’s no trick to it, like with other handhelds I’ve tested. And, the shape of the oven ensures you get an even burn, with no material wasted.

Like an iPhone, the IQ has only a few simple buttons. Click the power button five times to turn on, and five times to turn off. Davinci says it takes about twenty seconds to heat up depending on the temperature, and I’ve found that to be true through my testing.

Davinci IQThe color range. Our tester was the black one.  courtesy of Davinci Vaporizers

One of my favorite things about the IQ are the four pre-programmed “Smart Path” settings, indicated by a fancy LED display on the front of the unit. The Smart Paths slowly heat the device from a low-to-high temperature throughout your session. The lowest setting will make your herb last a long time, though you can produce much larger vapor clouds at a higher setting.

I found myself toggling between the second and third setting for most of my use, as it struck the right balance between cloud quality and burn efficiency. If you want to get extra-fancy, you can pair your IQ with an iPhone app that allows you to manually control the temperature, or even program your own Smart Paths to customize your session.

The one major issue with the IQ is its battery life. It needed to be charged after two or three decent sessions. You can use the IQ while it’s charging, but the point of a handheld vape is to be untethered. The battery is replaceable, however, and it only takes around two hours for a full charge.

It may be pricey, but if you’re in the market for quality handheld vaporizer, the IQ brings together high quality vapor, taste, precise temperature control, and user-friendliness in a slick-looking package. In my esteemed opinion, it’s the most innovative handheld vaporizer on the market right now.

The Boost is a totally different class of vape. It’s portable, yeah, but only technically. It stands more than 10 inches and has an awkward, imposing presence. Plus, it comes in a padded metal case that reminds me of something you’d use for a weapon.

All this is because the Boost is a high-powered concentrate rig. Like the Aurora, you won’t be able to use any herbs with this machine. And given the high temps needed to properly vaporize concentrate, this beast is built to deliver a ton of power, really quickly. That, of course, gives a harsh flavor, so the Boost also includes a percolator. This pulls the vapor through water, cooling the vapor and filtering out some of the unwanted particulates.

Build quality is solid, with a sturdy base packed with magnets and rubber O-rings that hold the rig together. It comes apart easily enough and can be stashed back into the case, but you probably won’t want to run the thing around too much as even disassembled, it’s still on the bulkier side.

Once you get past that, though, the Dr. Dabber Boost is a capable machine. It seems intimidating, and you may have to go over the instructions a few times, but all-told, it is, if anything, a bit too simple. You won’t get variable temperature settings as it runs continuously for 60-ish seconds before shutting off. During that time, the Boost will get hotter and hotter — so take that into account. There’s also not really any other features or drawbacks. What you see is what you get.

Vapor quality is consistent and potent. Be careful, even with the water filtration; it’s easy to overdo the Boost. You’ll also get quite a few sessions — up to 30 — on one charge. Beyond that, there’s not much to talk about. The biggest advantage here is the price and solid functionality. A comparable home set-up can often run far, far higher than the Boost’s comparatively easy-to-swallow $150 price tag. Plus, most oil or concentrate-based rigs come with what I’m going to call a “sketch” factor.

There’s not much appeal to heating up a nail with a blowtorch and then inhaling whatever comes out. The boost is clean-cut by comparison. It’s still not what I’d call a glamorous experience (it’s no Hydrology 9), but it’s worth a look if you prefer oils to herbs.

Pros

Powerhouse
Easy to use
Great price point

Cons

A bit intimidating
Only uses concentrate
No extra bells and whistles

Bottom Line

The Boost is an imposing, albeit simple rig for vaping oils and concentrates. It gets the job done, but if you’re looking for anything fancy, you might want to shop around.
